A beautiful area - there is still a lot of great scenery to see, even after the fire a few years ago. The main camping area is great. Full review by Judy H

Slightly disappointed the visitor center was closed for Covid reasons..... Even so, the ranger opened the window enough to give me a map to the forest roads/trails ;-) Probably not the best time to … Full review by SidSidow

I did not camp in my travels through the area. I did see campgrounds as I drove through. I assume you have searched TA for user reviews. I use another site on RV Park Reviews which I find quite helpful. That site listed 4 campgrounds around Chadron, NE which is on the north edge of the National Forest. One was a state park. Good luck and good camping.
We are wanting to maybe visit and camp at the Bessey campground, does it allow pets? And also, I have read a lot about tubing but can't seem to find a place that rents them. Do we have to bring our own or is there a place I am just not seeing? We found tanks, canoes and kayaks but no tubes!

I would suggest you call to ask your question about pets. I believe you have to have dogs on a leash but am not sure if they can stay overnight. I also believe that you can find places to rent th tanks for tubing. I am pretty sure that Uncle Bucks in Brewster rents tanks for tubing as well - also it is a great place to stay if you decide to not do the camping at the National Forest - and it is just down the road. You can probably call there as well and get most of your questions answered. Everybody in that area is very friendly and will be very helpful in making your stay fantastic.
