Hi, we have booked our trip and unfortunately they will be doing maintenance on the train line and cable car that week. Is it still worthwhile to visit Kuranda by bus?

Lots to do but getting there and leaving is part of the experience. If this is a one off trip go. If you can wait, wait.

Yes you can do the train both ways.That is how I used the train to Kuranda and it can give you an extra opportunity to get photo's if you missed out on the first train ride.
Hi Is there anything much to see by train from Cairns to Freshwater? We will have a rental car when we are doing our first trip to Cairns at Christmas and was wondering if things only become scenic from Freshwater onwards or whether it would be advantageous to leave from Cairns station? The benefit of getting on the train at Cairns is that it leaves from Cairns Central Shopping Centre so you can park your car in the shopping centre which is undercover which will help your car not getting really hot from the summer sun. You will also get on the train before others do at the other stations . Best views are from the right hand side of the train that is looking forward on the train.

Did you do a pre-booked day tour, or book this independently, i.e. book a oneway rail ticket, and then when in Kuranda book a one way cable back? and do they start and end at the same place? and any idea of cost doing it that way rather than a prebooked tour. What do you recommend?

I did a prebook as that was the easiest for me as i got picked up from my hotel. You can just go and get a ticket, not sure off cost, and it's quite a way out off town.
