When you arrive in Shirakawa or any of the villages, how do you find your guest house? Are there signs in Japanese only?

You really need to check it out closer to the time you plan to visit, it can change year on year. The amount of snow can also differ from year to year.

Hi everyone, Thanks for your contributions, I’ve decided that to fit ShiraKawa-go into my holidays plans would be to difficult, (time constraints). I wouldn’t want to rush my travel plans and not enjoy it to the max. I will return one day in the future to visit the whole region. Through my research I’ve learnt the following if anyone is having a similar dilemma: - 5.5hrs trip from Tokyo - 4.5-5hrs from Kyoto - bus to Shirakawa-go must be pre-booked in advance. (Not sure how long before) - need atleast 3hrs to visit the observation deck plus tour the village. - if your returning back to Tokyo or Kyoto you MUST be on the return bus by 3pm otherwise you’ll end up getting home 12hrs later or starting the night unexpected. - it’s better to stay overnight or in the region to get a better experience... as opposed to doing a day trip from a major city. Booked my trip yesterday ... Japan here we come!!!! ;)
