The Dickerson Park Zoo (DPZ) announced the death of Ade, an 18-and-a-half-year-old African lion on Friday. After battling with kidney failure, the care team decided to humanely euthanize him as his quality of life continued to decline.

African lions Hercules, Vilia, Daryna, and Krystyna at the Kyiv Zoo will be 16 years old on Jan. 25. During their time at the center, the lions have adapted remarkably well to the local climate. They have grown a warm undercoat and can walk in temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius.

An African lion was humanely euthanized at the Saint Louis Zoo on Tuesday. According to the zoo, Cabara was born in 2005 at the Basel Zoo in Switzerland and moved to the Saint Louis Zoo at 18 months old.
