COLUMBIA, S.C. — Prisma Richland Children’s Hospital in Columbia has confirmed that a patient treated at their facility has died from a brain-eating amoeba. According to the South Carolina Department of Health, they believe the patient was exposed to the rare, but deadly, organism at Lake Murray.
Rare cases of Naegleria fowleri can result in a severe infection in the brain, with infection fatal in around 95% of cases.
