Vice President Kamala Harris toured FEMA headquarters Monday and spoke to the governors of North Carolina and Georgia by phone about the federal help being offered to areas devastated by Hurricane Helene.

Busick, North Carolina, a remote town near Mount Mitchell State Park, received 30.78 inches of rain as a result of Helene — a record for the highest rainfall in the Appalachians from a tropical weather system. It beats the 27 inches that fell over the Virginian Appalachians in 1969.

Relief efforts continue in Asheville and the Western North Carolina area where a major disaster due to Tropical Storm Helene has left communities devastated, roads impassable and thousands without power.
