Officials in Rome have expressed their concerns following news that the Colosseum will welcome visitors after hours for a one-of-a-kind experience inspired by the upcoming 'Gladiator II.'

Plans to offer Airbnb customers the chance to take part in gladiator-style battles in Rome’s Colosseum have been decried as an insult to the UNESCO-listed ancient arena.

Alberto Campailla, the coordinator of Nonna Roma, a nonprofit organization which works to provide food and housing for low income people, said that Airbnb and other short-term rental sites such as Vrbo “are literally driving people out of not only the city center, but also the outskirts and suburban neighborhoods.”
