Nearly one million people have been forced to flee their homes after floods devastated towns across western and central Africa, humanitarian agencies said.

As torrential rains across Central and West Africa have unleashed the most catastrophic floods in decades, residents of Maiduguri, the capital of the fragile Nigerian state of Borno — which has been at the center of an Islamic extremists’ insurgency — said they have seen it all.

Floods across a swath of central and West Africa have displaced at least 2.9 million people, killed about 1,000 and are devastating crops in a region that’s already short of food and plagued by insecurity,
