Virginia Elects First Women as Governor and Lieutenant Governor
In a historic night for the Commonwealth, Virginia's 2025 election saw the unprecedented rise of women to the state's highest political offices, with the inauguration set for January 17th, 2026. The election of these women as governor and lieutenant governor not only breaks new ground in Virginia but also dispels the myth that female candidates for top executive roles lack voter support.
His Democratic opponent, Ghazala Hashmi, made history as the first Muslim woman elected to statewide office in the U.S.
Results timing: In 2024, 87 percent of votes were reported by midnight on election night, and 96 percent were reported by noon the next day. A small share of voters cast ballots by mail, which must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within three days.
State Senator Ghazala Hashmi is the Democratic nominee, formerly representing Virginia’s 10th State Senate district, and currently representing the 15th district. John Reid is the Republican nominee; he is formerly the host of the WRVA Morning Show, based in Richmond.
