Miami joins the Alabama Crimson Tide as the second team to punch their ticket to the second round of the CFP, as the No. 9 Crimson Tide overcame a 17-0 deficit to upset the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners 34-24 on Friday.
The defense was indeed the star of the show, limiting the Aggies to three points. Texas A&M ran just 89 yards on 35 carries, and quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw two interceptions, including one in the end zone in the final moments, was regularly under duress.
Miami kicker Carter Davis is having a performance to forget in the College Football Playoff. During the second quarter against Texas A&M, Carter missed a 47-yard field goal attempt. You could tell the wind at Kyle Field pushed the football just a bit too much to the right.
Miami star Malachi Toney lined up for a punt return deep in their own territory, but Toney changed the game with a sensational return. Toney broke through 55 yards down to the Texas A&M 25-yard line to give the Hurricanes their best chance at points all afternoon.
Miami took over on downs after the Texas A&M fake punt and drove the ball down inside the Aggies' 25-yard-line. With three seconds to play in the first half, Miami's Carter Davis once again lined up another field goal to try to give the Hurricanes a lead into halftime. The 40-yard attempt was wide right.
After No. 10 Miami secured a 10-3 win over No. 7 Texas A&M in the first round of the College Football Playoff, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal had a message for critics who wanted to see Notre Dame in the playoff instead.
As the team that was chosen over Notre Dame played a leading role in Saturday afternoon’s battle of futility, many fans and media personalities who questioned the Fighting Irish’s exclusion from the Playoff field took to social media to say “I told you so,” in one form or another.
In the lowest-scoring game in CFP history, No. 7 Texas A&M (11-2) was upset 10-3 by No. 10 Miami (11-2) in the first round, ending the Aggies’ season.
