A lot changed in the NHL following the season-long lockout in 2004-05. For goaltenders, the most significant change was the introduction of the shootout.

The thing that was most bothersome to me was the effort on loose pucks around the Devils net and there were a lot of them. Had Buffalo been harder on pucks in this department, this could’ve been a whole different situation.
