Skin-sparing mastectomy refers to the maximum preservation of the patient's own breast skin with removal of only the nipple-areola complex and any skin involved with or close to the tumor.
So traditionally, today, we would perform what's called a skin sparing mastectomy, where we try to leave as much skin behind as possible so that the plastic surgeon has it for the reconstruction.
