Striking city workers waved signs at traffic circling Philadelphia City Hall and joined picket lines outside libraries, police stations and other workplaces as nearly 10,000 blue-collar workers walked off the job Tuesday in search of better pay and benefits.

One of Philadelphia’s largest unions, which represents about 9,000 employees, is now on strike after negotiations with the city were unsuccessful.

Representatives from AFSCME District Council 33 and Mayor Cherelle Parker's administration resumed talks Monday night to avert the first major city worker strike since 1986.
