New Jersey canceled Tesla’s charging contract on the Turnpike with little public explanation. Applegreen was selected despite having far fewer charging stations and higher electricity rates. Tesla added 116 off-Turnpike chargers and remains open to negotiations with state officials.

After reaching a third-party deal, the state has asked Elon Musk's EV company to remove 64 existing chargers from the busy thoroughfare.

The agency that runs the highway said it was switching to another company to provide chargers that work for electrical vehicles other than just Teslas.
