Mainers voted Tuesday on changes to election and gun laws with Questions 1 and 2, and many communities voted on municipal elections and local referendums.

Voters in Maine and Texas have considered Republican-backed proposals that proponents say would safeguard elections, but opponents believe are intended to make voting more difficult.

On Tuesday, Maine voters rejected Question 1, a Republican-backed measure primarily about voter ID, that, if approved, would have restricted absentee voting and ballot access and disenfranchised eligible voters.

Under the proposal, Maine voters would need to show a driver’s license, passport, military ID, or a "free nondriver identification card" to cast their ballots.

Texas voters approved two state constitutional amendments in statewide votes, NBC News projects, part of a slew of state ballot measures voters around the country considered on Tuesday. The ballot measures amend Texas’ constitution to clarify that only U.S. citizens can vote in the state and to enshrine parental rights.
