Maine voters reject new GOP-backed voter ID requirement while Texans approve citizenship proposal
Voters in Maine and Texas have considered Republican-backed proposals that proponents say would safeguard elections, but opponents believe are intended to make voting more difficult.
On Tuesday, Maine voters rejected Question 1, a Republican-backed measure primarily about voter ID, that, if approved, would have restricted absentee voting and ballot access and disenfranchised eligible voters.
Under the proposal, Maine voters would need to show a driver’s license, passport, military ID, or a "free nondriver identification card" to cast their ballots.
