All flights to and from El Paso International Airport in Texas have been canceled for “special security reasons,” the Federal Aviation Administration said early Wednesday.

Flights were grounded overnight for "security reasons," but conflicting accounts have left travelers wondering what really triggered the shutdown.

By David Shepardson WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - The top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee said on Thursday the brief shutdown of El Paso airport by the Federal Aviation Administration because of safety concerns posed by the use of a military laser-based anti-drone system was unacceptable.

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed El Paso corporate law attorney Pat Gordon to the powerful commission that oversees billions in state transportation funds. He fills an unexpired term through February 2027.

"DPS is NOT closing the major highways – or any roads – in or out of the area over the next 10 days," the agency said.
