Once service is restored, customers who have lost water service should allow water to run through a sink or tub faucet until it is clear. In case of a water emergency, residents should also immediately report any suspected water main break by calling 311 in Baltimore City or 443-263-2220 in Baltimore County.

Deputy Director of Detroit Water and Sewerage said the city's crews are "treading water" as they repair breaks and wait for warmer temperatures.

The cold weather has caused an increase in water main breaks as underground pipes expand and contract because of changes in temperatures. A Baltimore City Department of Public Works command center opened on Mattfeldt Avenue in north Baltimore last week in anticipation of the cold temperatures.
