FLANDREAU, S.D. (KELO) — A landmark of many small rural towns across KELOLAND is often the local grain elevator. An old one in Flandreau was demolished Monday to pave the way for future projects.

The Flandreau City Band was revived in July 2003 after being dormant for over 20 years. You can hear the music almost every Thursday night in the summer from the Flandreau band shell.

The city of Flandreau is unaffiliated with the tribal government. The town of about 2,300 people is on the border of the tribe’s reservation in Moody County, about 40 miles north of Sioux Falls.

"The city, tribe and FDC are working, best we can, to help the family coordinate efforts they feel will most help them in the coming days, weeks, and months," the city of Flandreau said on Facebook.

City officials believe the decision to part ways was because of a disagreement about marijuana enforcement. The tribe voted in early June to legalize marijuana on the reservation by Jan. 1, 2016.
