Republican state lawmakers currently hold a supermajority in both the North Carolina Senate and House, allowing the caucus alone to override any veto from the governor.

A successful override of the governor’s veto will require one more vote in the Senate, which convenes Wednesday afternoon.

It’s likely the Republican supermajorities in both chambers will override the veto of House Bill 10, as they have seven of Gov. Roy Cooper’s eight vetoes this session.

The North Carolina House of Representatives voted to override the veto of a bill that would force sheriffs to work with federal immigration officials to detain people who are in the U.S. illegally in some circumstances.

A bill dealing with school choice and immigration enforcement is one step closer to becoming law after a successful veto override in the North Carolina House Tuesday afternoon. The override vote for HB 10 was 72-44.
