Arkansas death row inmate Latavious Johnson died of unknown causes at the Varner SuperMax prison on Friday afternoon, according to the state’s department of corrections.

The Arkansas Supreme Court gave a temporary victory to the state Board of Corrections and its chairman, Benny Magness, on Thursday in a long-running dispute over who has authority over the Department of Corrections and its secretary — the board or the governor.

A U.S. Border Patrol tactical unit from Texas, known as BORTAC, has been deployed to Arkansas to assist in the manhunt for Grant Hardin, officials said.

The Arkansas Court of Appeals overturned a 60-year prison sentence for Joseph Gilbert due to a violation of his right to a speedy trial, which began when he was shackled by a detective in November 2018.

More than a week after inmate and former police chief Grant Hardin escaped from a north Arkansas prison, documents have been filed in state and federal court connected to the escape.
