The National Hurricane Center in Miami warned of "life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides" throughout Hispaniola.
According to the National Hurricane Center's 4 a.m. Sunday advisory, Category 3 Hurricane Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 125 miles south-southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 280 miles west-southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. At 8 p.m. Saturday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Category 2 Hurricane Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 130 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 260 miles west-southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. The hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, is moving west at 3 mph.
Melissa had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph early Wednesday and was centered about 325 miles south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
