A 42-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in Mallow, County Cork last week. Joe Butler, of the Belfry in Mallow, was arrested on Tuesday following the discovery of the body of 31-year-old Paula Canty.

Joseph Butler of the Belfry, Bridewell Lane, Mallow was charged with the murder Paula Canty (31) at the Belfry, Bridewell Lane, Mallow on January 3rd. Mr Butler, who is originally from Midleton in east Cork, was brought before Midleton District Court at 11am this morning where he was charged with the murder of Ms Canty.

The man, a native of Midleton in east Cork, was arrested on Monday afternoon for questioning about the murder of 31-year-old Paula Canty at her flat in Mallow last Friday. It is understood that gardaí identified the man from CCTV footage as being with Ms Canty when she was out socialising around Mallow town late last Thursday night.
