The intense thunderstorm may have looked and sounded like a tornado, but that's not what happened, according to forecasters who examined the damage.

A fast-moving and violent thunderstorm killed three people and left a path of destruction in central New Jersey.

PLAINFIELD, New Jersey (WABC) -- A line of severe weather carved a path of destruction through Central Jersey, killing at least three people. Officials said one person died in North Plainfield and two others lost their lives in Plainfield.

The storm caused the Eno River to set a new flooding record. The entire park is closed until further notice. Park officials are asking for the public’s patience as they continue damage assessment.

Storm damage extending from the Susquehanna Valley into Chester county and more storms are to come this afternoon. We have viewer photos from Chester county showing some of the damage.

In one incident in South Plainfield, a tree and some wires fell on top of a car and trapped people inside, according to the National Weather Service Mount Holly. Police have not released any information about that specific incident.

Potentially severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across the New York City area later Tuesday, threatening intense winds and flooding rains that have already prompted National Weather Service alerts.
