An L clearance is a security clearance used by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission for civilian access relating to nuclear materials and information under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954.

The DOE grants “Q” or “L” access authorizations allowing individuals access to classified material when required by his or her official duties, or when eligibility for access to or control over special nuclear material or information is needed.

L clearances allow access to Secret National Security Information and to Special Nuclear Material (SNM) categories 3 and 4, but not to Secret Restricted Data or SNM categories 1 and 2.
