setting 45 degrees on metal chop saws?

Mar 9, 2008 · Porter Cable, Milwaukee, Makita, etc all make cold cut saws designed to operate at the speeds dictated by carbide blades. I understand that Evolution (looks like a Porter Cable) also makes a 14" cold cut saw which Sears sells for in the $270 range. If it is indeed, a rebadged PC, it is a good saw. The cold cut saws are well worth the money.

Dec 26, 2007 · For cutting steel, you're better served with something like Milwaukee's metal cutting saw (8" Carbide blade). A less expensive alternative is a cheap skil saw (like $50-60 at Lowes/HD) and a 7 1/4" Bullet carbide blade. Will do a satisfactory job but throws a lot of steel slivers (recommend full face shield).

Aug 4, 2007 · Let the work cool down and then try again. Also make sure the work is secure and flat on the table. This gets worse with the more angle you put on the cut. The cheaper the blades you use the more this problem shows up. I mostly use the chop saw on 1/4 inch strap, light square tube and light round tube.

If you are off 5-10 degrees with a wood miter saw it will show up instantly, if you are 5-10 degrees off with a chop saw, it just means a wider gap that has to be filled with the welder.

06-24-2008, 12:59 PM. You measure the steel from outside corner to outside corner and cut it with a power hack saw or band saw with the vise set at 45 degrees. You can see the corner clamps laying on the floor to hold the ends while welding. Also the long brace across is used to check for square by measuring from opposite corners...

Blade was the 40 toof model. Morse 14", 72 tooth blades ($120) were sharper than the DW blades out of the box. They cut much more smoothly than the DW's. Doing nothing special, general cutting, I was getting only about 1500 cuts before they would start really struggling and getting VERY loud.
