Basking Shark | Oceana

It’s international day of education - so here’s a wee fact! Did you know that basking sharks can fully send it out of the water. The behaviour is called breaching and has been recorded at over 5m/s. Many folk don’t believe it as basking sharks are well known to be mouth open and slow moving in their stereotypical view. It’s thought the behaviour has a connection to courtship/communication. Stick your nose up! When the zooplankton is plentiful, basking sharks can feed hard at the surface. They move erratically around the thickest spots of food and is spectacular to watch. In this clip whilst watching from a distance the shark turns to feed close to the boat. It was also a strong year for mackerel and a school of them are ‘boiling’ at the surface whilst they are feeding. We’re looking forward to some days like this in the summer! | Basking Shark Scotland
