Last weekend, Atkinson Construction installed this 223-foot-long, 246,500-pound record-setting girder on the new southbound I-5 Puyallup River bridge in Tacoma. We pulled together a video of the installation. It's the longest prestressed girder ever manufactured in the United States. This past Saturday, Jan. 23, a new concrete roadway took shape atop the new bridge over I-5 in Fife. It took 50 truckloads of concrete to pave a bridge deck 66-feet wide and 225-feet long. Note the large yellow machine in the video which travels on rails, leveling and smoothing the concrete as it moves forward. This new 4-lane bridge will replace the 2-lane 70th Avenue East Bridge and is expected to open in mid-2021. Big thanks to all the workers who made it happen! The work is part of our SR 16

Today is the last day for full closures this week on the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge in Hoquiam, near the coast. The 97-year-old bridge is having its’ steel beams repaired. Usually, we only have to close one lane for this kind of work. But the lanes on this bridge, built in 1928, are narrow are too narrow to do that safely.
